I’m a desperate “One Scripture Wonder” searcher. I barely ever read the bible and then when everything goes to shit I expect to open the bible and a miracle scripture to stand out and save the day. So far this has worked, not saying this is a model of self help to replicate. Probably more reliable to read a scripture everyday.
Today while I sit on the couch in tears I go to Google and type in “scripture for today – images”. About three images in I get this.
And what gets the tears rolling even harder is that it is from my favorite book of the bible. I could almost tear out every other chapter (total sacrilege) and live my life out of this story. Actually I’d leave in Genesis, that’s solid gold in there too, hence why two of my children are named after two of the most famous men out of that chapter.
Where am I right now that I must be still? Where are you? This scripture comes from this background…
So the Israelite’s have been freed from Egypt, God decides not to lead them by road, as this will mean they will encounter philistines and philistines = war. God decides his people will not tolerate war right now and would run back to Egypt (sooks but we have all been there), and so he leads them the long way, into the wilderness. They are also carrying the bones of Joseph (the man my 3rd son is named after), Joseph made them promise to bring his bones back to their home land.
But then… God tells his people to turn around and camp on the shore of the sea.
“Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are lost; they’re confused. The wilderness has closed in on them.’ Then I’ll make Pharaoh’s heart stubborn again and he’ll chase after them. And I’ll use Pharaoh and his army to put my glory on display. Then the Egyptians will realize that I am God.” (Thank you God for making this about you, never mind my safety)
And that’s exactly what happened.
As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw them—Egyptians! Coming at them!
They were totally afraid. They cried out in terror to God. They told Moses, “Weren’t the cemeteries large enough in Egypt so that you had to take us out here in the wilderness to die? What have you done to us, taking us out of Egypt? Back in Egypt didn’t we tell you this would happen? Didn’t we tell you, ‘Leave us alone here in Egypt—we’re better off as slaves in Egypt than as corpses in the wilderness.’”
Moses spoke to the people: “Don’t be afraid. Stand firm and watch God do his work of salvation for you today. Take a good look at the Egyptians today for you’re never going to see them again.
CUE IN MY “ONE SCRIPTURE WONDER” FOR TODAY (in the “Message” version of the bible, verse 14)
God will fight the battle for you.
And you? You keep your mouths shut!”
And without telling you the entire Exodus story, God parted an entire ocean, led his beloved people through it and as the Egyptians pursued them, they were swept away by the same ocean.
And the women picked up their tambourines (cause you always pack tambourines) and they sung together. The Israelites continued to walk deeper into the wilderness, as God directed them, taught them, trained them for an entire generation.
This is why my blog is called wilderness calling.
Because we are called to leave what we know, the easy, the predictable. When we take up the calling, we plunder the house of our enemies! When the Israelites left Egypt, God told them to go to the Egyptians houses and ask them for their gold, and they gave it to them!!!!! They left with their slave masters gold! When you leave your slavery, you plunder your enemy.
And sometimes, as we see in this story, we are deliberately led into situations we CANNOT solve or fix ourselves. We get led to camp in between a sea and our enemy. And you look ahead and its just a giant ocean, no bridge, and the one that was leading you is no where to be seen.
“The angel of God that had been leading the camp of Israel now shifted and got behind them.” (exodus 14:19)
HE HAS YOUR BACK! And I know the sea ahead looks rough, and you have so many people to look after, and you have this big dream that your trying to take every one on with you. And they are all looking at you like, “Your crazy, look what you led us into, you fruitloop!”
But this isn’t your time, this isn’t your move. Its His.
Has he told you to stop doing what he told you to do? …. if the answer is no, than you hold up you stick and you keep walking, ocean or no ocean. Don’t forget your tambourine.
